since this is a topic of future games, I was wondering if at anytime there would be a game where there are chubby characters or a “bid your own character” feature in anything upcoming?

We’re actually planning to at least test the feasibility of making a build-your-own-character type of game next.

And while we don’t have any chubby characters planned, we do have quite a few ‘blank slate’ characters appearance-wise, so who knows! 😉

The “build your own character” thing seems really complicated, so I don’t think anyone would mind waiting for a solid system. I can tell you though that I’m highly anticipating it.

For Chubby characters if the team ever needed help designing one, personality and art wise, I can think of a few =p

Also it just popped in my head, but would there ever be any mini-games inside any future games? like going to a casino and playing strip poker, maybe a public game where people watch or jeer from a crowd, or something private that goes further when you win the game?

I know I have spent hours on mini-games in plenty other games I’ve played, and card games are some of the most basic and fun to play.

Wow i love a lot of these ideas. This discussion got good again ^.^ Sorry I haven’t been around, health issues got to me.

Would love to add card games. Somewhat relatedly, have recently broke new ground in figuring out how to design “Dating Sim — THE CARD GAME” XD

Will make a note about strip poker and such. If you’d like to share personality or art for a chubby character, we are all eyes and ears~

Ooo, minigames is a good idea. Perhaps one that is one of those old style, side-scrolling shooters, with rewards of porn pics for completing a level or hell even keys to a room or something for higher levels.

Also a maze like minigame never goes amiss :3

Or there’s always the simple pacman game.
All of these could even be played on retro arcade machines someplace.

Hell, if i new anything about how to make games beyond very simple things…i’d give something like that a go myself.

Strip-poker like games make me want to learn how to play poke xD

If I were to do strip poker…

A problem some games have is not giving enough feedback to the player. Where there are crazy fun details and math going on, but the player never sees it (especially in RPGs.)

In the poker games I’ve played, the better ones will show who you’re playing with, and characters might say something here and there, but the algorithms each use to play are so hidden that they all seem alike.

SO! I’d do it like Nintendo’s Punch-Out series XD where it’s more fun if you flat out know how they’re playing, and of course make them wager more than their clothes if you know what I mean.

I certainly have no complaints 😀

nothing wrong with a few pre-programmed events, especially with sexy outcomes~
though if the numbers are the hard part then why not try something more simple, like a clicking game. For instance click the mouse or an arrow key to win in an arm wrestling match, or a racing game where the opponent isn’t really the main obstacle but the environment is, or a swimming event where the opponent has a set speed but the better you coordinate your button timing the better you are? Each event could take place with a certain character as well. Like how AJ is into muscle and work outs, or Ben is into swimming, could even have a special skinny dipping sequence.

Oh and there could be a non-sexual sequence for your job, like making a number of burgers before a time limit. Gradually the orders could get harder.

That’s definitely an idea. My only concern with it would be wanting things not to get too tedious, so they would probably be more ‘coffee break’ optional games.

    Though…

I really enjoyed those retro 8bit games in No More Heroes 2. Would be funny to add something like it. Though I’m not sure if anyone else would find it as amusing as I would XD Maybe mix your idea with that, could work out.

heh heh well I never said they needed to be mandatory games for the story, they would just be silly little extras. I know I enjoy mini-games, and any true gamer would want to master them X3

heh heh but yes, they can be tedious. But would also pad out the games, possibly adding an extra hour or two. I never played no more heroes 2, are the mini-games fun?

I enjoyed them, especially the retro feel. They even had those badly compressed voice-overs, like the ones you’d hear in old Nintendo games.

    Am honestly considering it…

I think arrow keys or keyboard keys are more… global? Harder to use a trackpad for click-type games, at least for ones that are rapid.

Edit: Oh, one thing I like with mini-games, is when progress changes the scene. Like games where the more you progress, the less clothing the subject has, rather than going from fully clothed to nothing right away.

I liked a lot of the aspects about Common Grounds, but I think that the activities (outside of the relationship visits) felt kind of shallow. I actually kind of felt one of the lines with Chet and Troy summed it up, where they said Roger was afraid Zell was “becoming a shut in”. It seemed kind of weird considering the point was supposed to be Zell getting out there and meeting people (to boink ;-> ), but I thought they were correct.

I realize that every intricacy is more and more programming, but if there were another game like Common Grounds made, I’d like to see more depth to the player’s improvement and choices. For instance, in the game, Ben repeatedly talked about going out for the swim team. It could be made a choice for Zell to do so as well, both to get closer to Ben and open the possibility for other activities and character interactions (AJ could also be impressed, as he’s a bit of a jock). Joining would have a minimum stat requirement, giving another way for people to see advancement and accomplishment, rather than feeling like they’re grinding to get the next cutscene. Upon joining, swimming laps at the pool could add variety to the jogging/weightlifting for the exercise routine, obligations could change because of swim meets, and new relationship opportunities could present themselves. As is, all the relationship options were more or less presented right at the start, but joining the Swim Team could have been how the character met Ben in the first place if the game had been made with that in mind.

Similar activities could be made available that take advantage of other attributes. Zell’s “Ability” score seems to be tied to graphic design, so he could land a position in the school paper or something, high Focus might land him a spot with a more academic group, so on and so forth, scattering the romance options and opportunities to be found through the game in multiple playthroughs. You wouldn’t have to have unique situations and activities for every single character or anything, but having a variety of activities available that could influence your game’s outcome and romantic options would both make the experience feel more organic and add replay value.

All in all, I thought that Common Grounds was thoroughly enjoyable, I just couldn’t help feeling like I sped through it. The meat of the game (the relationships and storyline) were very solid, and the background elements of graphics and music were both appropriate and fun. Something like this, but expanded just a little bit I think would make it cross the line from good to great.
